How do you get great event photos?

Event photos are different to a commercial shoot as often, you have zero control over the lighting and what happens on the day. Preparation, adapting to the environment, knowing your equipment's capabilities, and being part of the action are the things that make or break your event photos. Adapting to the environment you're in is key as you'll be able to control any problems that occur, changing lights, fast-moving action, being in the right place are things that can be utilised to make the best photos. This also links to knowing your equipment's capabilities. All the problems above can be controlled within or with the help of your equipment, choosing the correct settings, shutter speeds, image bursts or lenses will help you get the best images possible.

Is post-production important in Event Photography?

Post-production doesn't just mean removing blemishes, post-production includes adjusting colours, brightness, and most importantly with event photos, removing the unwanted images. Event photographers often take bursts of images to ensure the action is captured and that they haven't missed important moments. The best thing to do from the beginning is to sort through the images and to flag the favourites, then colour correct each images, making sure they are exposed correctly and the colours are adjusted accordingly and any distractions are removed. Editing event photographs can be very time-consuming due to the volume of images and the difference between each image.

What is the best equipment for Event Photography?

The camera and the lens you use are quite important when it comes down to event photography. Sometimes events can be in the darkest environments and a flash will do the job but maybe not to what you may need it for. With this, using the highest quality gear can make a big difference to the quality of the images. Image noise is a very big problem when it comes to low lighting situations and a high-quality camera often means less noise. The lens can have a big impact on low light performance as some lenses let in more light than others. Having a lens with the biggest aperture can really make a difference when it comes to low-light situations.

There are different types of lenses that can be used for event photography such as wide-angle, which can capture the entire scene, or a zoom lens to get closer to the subject. For instance, a zoom lens is very good when it comes to not being too intrusive in a personal conversation.

In some circumstances and when permitted, a flash can be used to help illuminate your subject, however, it’s very important to use the softest light so a diffuser on the flash is always the best way to go results in a lot softer skin and not as harsh shadows.
